Undeterred, Dan proposes they produce their ain anthology together, to be recorded alive during the summer at various public locations effectually the city. He tells her the audiences love the way he plays it, and that their free energy fills the room. He believes that music is most sharing information technology with people, merely Gretta insists information technology is not what she intended for that song. Managing director John Carney conceived the premise for Begin Again several years before he began to write the screenplay in 2010.[ii] The story was partly inspired by his ain experiences equally a musician in a band,[2] and from his impression of the artists and repertoire (A&R) executives of tape labels during the 1990s, which formed the basis of Dan'south grapheme.[4] Carney wrote the script, which was initially titled Can a Song Save Your Life?, earlier he, Glen Hansard, and Gregg Alexander began writing the songs; he wanted "to work the music effectually the story, instead of the other way around."[4] The script's style of featuring songs as a natural element of the story was inspired by the 1954 Judy Garland musical film A Star Is Born, and is also employed in Carney'south earlier motion picture Once (2007).[5] Carney first pitched the movie in 2010 to filmmaker Judd Apatow, who produced the motion-picture show aslope Tobin Armbrust and Anthony Bregman whose production company Exclusive Media financed the motion picture'south United states of america$viii million budget.[ii]

Before casting Keira Knightley as Gretta, Carney considered casting a pop vocalist such equally Adele in the main role, as well equally a number of other actresses including Scarlett Johansson, who was at 1 point attached to the projection.[two] [6] Knightley, who had never sung professionally before, prepared for the role by training with a vocal coach and learning how to play a guitar.[vii] Marking Ruffalo was Carney'due south beginning choice for the role of Dan,[2] and agreed to star in the film afterwards Carney sent him the starting time draft of the screenplay.[6] Singer Adam Levine was besides the only person Carney considered casting equally Dave, and won the part afterwards talking with Carney over Skype and recording some dialogue every bit an audition;[eight] he declined to exist paid for appearing in the film.[ix] Although he had had modest interim parts on television before, Begin Over again marked his first role in a film.[8] Carney approached James Corden to announced in the flick later on admiring Corden's operation in the atomic number 82 function in a Broadway production of One Man, 2 Guvnors.[10]

Principal photography of the picture began in New York City on July two, 2012,[eleven] and lasted for 23 days.[12] Carney chose to movie in Manhattan's lesser known neighborhoods that would be more recognizable to locals than tourists. Specific locations included Greenwich Village, the East Village, Times Square, and Washington Square Park.[13] [14] Rather than performing live during filming, the actors sang to pre-recorded tracks. In order to save money on hiring a full crew and extras, some scenes—including one in Times Square—were shot belatedly at night with a handheld camera.[two] The rooftop location nigh the Empire Country Edifice is located at 28 Westward 36th St.[15] [16] [17] [xviii]

Carney's criticism of Knightley [edit]

During a serial of interviews to promote his film Sing Street in 2016, Carney repeatedly criticized Knightley'south performance and comportment while making Brainstorm Again. When asked most the critical reaction to Sing Street by The Independent, Carney responded unprompted that "it's a modest personal picture show with no Keira Knightleys in it. It's actually rewarding."[19] In the same interview, Carney also referred to her repeatedly equally a model, despite the fact that Knightley had been working professionally as an actress since childhood, maxim "I'll never brand a motion picture with supermodels once again." He besides criticized her in an interview with Heyuguys.com, saying, "I but call up with Keira it was similar asking her to do something that she could not practice."[20] Though he did non specifically name Knightley, he did, in an interview with Den of Geek, say that his desire to make Sing Street came from his "feel of working, let'southward face it, with a model on my concluding moving-picture show".[21] Filmmakers Massy Tadjedin, Mark Romanek, Lorene Scafaria and Lynn Shelton, who had worked with Knightley on other films, tweeted their back up for her after Carney'southward comments.[22]

Carney later tweeted a public amends saying he felt similar "a complete idiot" and saying that Knightley was "nothing but professional and dedicated" during the filming of the motion picture.[23]

In 2019, when asked about Carney'due south comments, Knightley accepted his apology and revealed that she was not shocked by his earlier comments as they had non gotten along during filming.[24] [25]
