What is Ozempic?

How Does Ozempic Work?

Ozempic, also called Semaglutide, is a selective glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) receptor agonist and works by increasing insulin secretion, decreasing appetite and keeps you feeling satiated, longer.

Losing weight as a byproduct of taking Ozempic helps reduce the risk of obesity-related illnesses such as stroke, heart attack, and kidney disease. While most studies suggest losing 5% or more of total body weight is enough to reduce the risk of obesity-related illnesses, Ozempic weight loss averages are high above this goal.

The ingredient in Ozempic (known as semaglutide) has been shown to promote weight loss even in individuals without diabetes, with an average of 14.9% reduction in total weight. This version of semaglutide is branded as Wegovy. This means if you weighed 200 pounds and took Semaglutide as prescribed, you could lose up to 29.8 pounds.

Because Ozempic is so effective with weight loss, the weight reduction itself helps to control diabetes. Ozempic works so effectively because of its effects on reducing food cravings while promoting the "full" feeling after meals. Ozempic also decreases your appetite by slowing down gastric emptying.

Ozempic Cost

How much does Ozempic cost on average? Ozempic is a relatively new medication which means it is more expensive. Ozempic injections cost more than the pill version of semaglutide known as Rybelsus, but the injections last longer.

The cost of Ozempic will be less with insurance coverage. Ozempic may be covered partially by your insurance. With some commercial insurance plans, you may be eligible to pay as little as $25 when you receive a prescription for either a 1-month or 3-month supply.

Ozempic savings cards are available through the pharmaceutical vendor, Novo Nordisk, and provide insurance holders additional discounts. Some requirements and restrictions apply for the Ozempic savings card such as:

  • A valid prescription for Ozempic must be on file at the pharmacy, preferably a 3-month prescription
  • You cannot seek reimbursement or submit claims for reimbursements to Medicaid, Medicare, Medicap, VA, DOD, TRICARE, or any similar federal or state program.
  • You must seek reimbursement from a commercial insurance
  • The discount cannot be redeemed as cash

Example discounts on the cost of Ozempic with the savings card include:

  • $150 per 1-month injectable
  • $300 per 2-month injectable
  • $450 per 3-month injectable

Unfortunately, many insurance plans do not cover Ozempic at all. The cost of Ozempic at wholesale prices is much more expensive than with insurance. The following is an average estimated price range and is a reference point only:

Ozempic Side Effects and Contraindications

Ozempic has some serious contraindications. If you have hypersensitivity to Semaglutide or any component of the drug formulation you should not take Ozempic. If you have a history of pancreatitis,  have a personal or familial medical history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not take Ozempic.  If you are planning to become pregnant soon, it is advisable to stop Ozempic at least 2 months prior to conception.

Some common side effects of Ozempic include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Decreased appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Dyspepsia (heartburn)
  • Flatulence
  • Vomiting

The most common side effects are nausea and abdominal pain.

Ozempic Dosage

Ozempic is dosed as a weekly injection into the skin. Administer the injection into the skin on your abdomen, thigh or upper arm, at the same time of day on the same day each week. The solution you inject should appear clear. Do not use the solution if it appears cloudy or discolored.

When using the prefilled pen, prime the needle before the first injection by turning the dose selector to the flow check while priming the solution through the needle and into the air. Priming is not required for subsequent injections, just the first injection with a new prefilled pen.

Make sure to use a new needle for each injection and don't share pens with other people.

Ozempic injections are available and can be injected into a fatty part of your body such as your abdomen, thigh, or arm (similar to insulin injection sites). The following Ozempic injections are offered as pen-injectors and are given subcutaneously:

  • 0.25 or 0.5 mg/dose pen or
  • 1.0 mg/dose pen
